998- India- TB Aftermath Study

Approximately 7% of all reported tuberculosis (TB) cases each year are recurrent, occurring among people who have had TB in the recent or distant past. TB recurrence is particularly common in India, which has the largest TB burden worldwide. Although patients recently treated for TB are at high risk of developing TB again, evidence around effective active case finding (ACF) strategies in this population is scarce. We are conducting a hybrid type I effectiveness-implementation non-inferiority randomized trial to compare the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and feasibility of two ACF strategies among individuals who have completed TB treatment and their household contacts (HHCs). Our specific objectives are:
1) To conduct a non-inferiority randomized trial to measure the comparative effectiveness of two potentially implementable ACF strategies within the NTEP, conducted by existing NTEP healthcare workers (HCWs): (i) home-based ACF (HACF) and (ii) telephonic ACF (TACF)
2) To characterize implementation processes of the ACF strategies using the RE-AIM framework to inform their future scale-up and sustainability
3) To model the impact and cost-effectiveness of the ACF strategies evaluated in the trial, and of potential alternative strategies for the targeting and timing of those strategies
4) To measure the association of the severity, chronicity, and progression of post-TB lung impairment with recurrent TB disease

The student with work with our study staff at Dr. DY Patil Medical College in Pune, India to review, collect, and analyze costing data as part of the health economic evaluation component of the TB Aftermath study. Specifics of key tasks which the student may perform during the GHEFP placement include:
1) Review and map study finance records based key intervention implementation activity
2) Review and analyze activity-based time data recorded within our study’s CRFs
3) Data cleaning and analysis of patient cost survey data
4) Assessment of intervention implementation costs and associated drivers

In addition to receiving mentorship from Dr. Golub, the student will receive guidance and supervision from the health economics lead investigator, Professor Hojoon Sohn at the Seoul National University through regular weekly zoom calls and coordinated health economics sub-study team meetings.
